Michael Ayrton
1921 - 1975
Ayrton originally known as an artist and writer began to sculpt in 1954, receiving advice from Henry Moore. He travelled widely throughout his life, his trip in 1956 to Cumae and subsequent trips to Greek sanctuaries inspired work in mythological figures, such as the Slender Sentinel and the Icarus series.
Ayton’s sculpture and paintings are in over 50 public collections worldwide, including the Tate Gallery and MOMA, New York, there have been over 70 one-man shows of his work internationally, including Redfern Gallery and Grosvenor Gallery, London.
