Lynn Chadwick and the New Generation

For the first time in our twenty-year history we invited a guest curator to collaborate with us, Jerwood Award-winner Lorraine Robbins, who now combines her own fine art practice with teaching Art and Design at Stroud College.
2011 saw the sixtieth anniversary of the Festival of Britain for which the then relatively unknown sculptor Lynn Chadwick was commissioned to make two major works. It therefore seemed fitting that we commissioned six young artists to produce new works in response to and inspired by a Chadwick sculpture of their choice.
Like Chadwick, Lorraine Robbins, Daniel Sparkes, Gavin McClafferty, Ralph Macartney and duo Cockings & Hodge all have close links with Stroud, having grown up, studied or worked in the area. The results of their challenging brief made an exhibition which surprised, delighted and above all, provoked thought, opinion, discussion and debate.
